STEPS
1
PREP WORK: Clear work space, assemble all necessary parts, plug soldering iron in and let it heat up. 2
MARK WHERE YOU WANT THEM TO JOIN (IT HAS TO BE ABOVE THE MICROPHONE). Then cut the wires about an inch longer that. However, for the headphones that merge into one cord like the one on the very right of the diagram, you can just cut the single merged cord (this is personal preference). 3
STRIP THE WIRES FROM THE CUT TO THE MARKS YOU MADE EARLIER. 4
THE WIRE YOU JUST EXPOSED WILL BE COLOURED EITHER RED, BLUE/GREEN, AND THERE WILL BE A COPPER ONE. Remove the colour from the wires, but remember which colour is which. 5
IF YOU\'RE USING THE SAME TYPE OF HEADPHONES AS IN THIS ARTICLE (SEE TIPS) COMBINE ALL THE GROUND WIRES TOGETHER, AND THEN COMBINE THE COLOURED WIRES TO THE CORRESPONDING WIRES. Don't solder yet. 6
TEST THE HEADPHONES NOW. Plug it into a music source and play something. Do not touch the exposed wires and make sure the three wires (red-red, blue-blue, copper-c) are not touching each other. Making sure that the connections are good as well as making sure that the sound goes to the correct ear. If it's not going to the correct ear, disconnect the wires then reconnect them with them as red-blue, red-blue. If it's correct now, move on. 7
SOLDER the connections. 8
TEST THE CONNECTIONS AGAIN. 9
TAPE THE WIRES WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE (INDIVIDUALLY). 10
TAPE THE CORDS INTO ONE. Test it in case the taping job broke the connection (it can happen if you are too rough with it). Enjoy. TIPS
There are two styles of of headphones here, this article used the single cord one. For the double cord it's slightly easier. The only difference is where you joined the two ground wires (copper) from the iPhone ear buds to the single one from the headphone you would have to just connect the individual cords to each other (copper-copper, blue-blue, red-red).
WARNINGS
Soldering irons are hot. You can get burned.
Try not to inhale the smoke from the solder.
If you screw this up both of your headphones can be destroyed.
Once you are done, be careful not to bend the part that you soldered/taped together. You may sever the connection, and then you'll either have to redo it by carefully removing the tape and re-soldering, or you're screwed
THINGS YOU\'LL NEED
iPhone headphones (with microphone)
Preferred headphones (without microphone)
Soldering Iron
Solder
Flux (Don't wait until you're in the middle of trying to solder something to remember to get flux. It may cause a panicked drive to the nearest electronics store.)
A flat surface to work on (not a cardboard box or other flammable surface)
A lighter
Electrical tape
