DFU stands for Device Firmware Update, is a mode that allows the device to be restored from any state, in which the iPhone can interact with iTunes without loading the OS or boot loader. In DFU mode, iPhone can be restored to any state, so things like downgrade/upgrade the iOS version, jailbreak the phone, or to unlock the SIM card. For those who have the need, here’s a how-to on entering and exiting DFU mode.
STEPS
1
CONNECT YOUR IPHONE TO THE PC VIA THE USB CABLE, REMEMBER TO KEEP ITUNES RUNNING. 2
NEXT TURN OFF YOUR IPHONE BY HOLDING DOWN THE BUTTON AT THE TOP OF THE PHONE. (With cable attached.) 3
CONTINUE TO HOLD THE POWER BUTTON, WITH PRESSING AND HOLDING THE HOME BUTTON AT THE SAME TIME FOR EXACTLY 10 SECONDS. 4
RELEASE THE POWER BUTTON AND CONTINUE PRESSING THE HOME BUTTON UNTIL A MESSAGE APPEARS IN ITUNES THAT AN IPHONE IN RECOVERY MODE HAS BEEN DETECTED. 5
WHEN YOUR IPHONE IS ON DFU, YOUR SCREEN WILL BE COMPLETELY BLACK, IF YOU SEE RESTORE LOGO, ITUNES LOGO OR ANY MESSAGE SHOWS UP ON YOUR SCREEN, THAT MEANS YOUR PHONE IS IN STANDARD RECOVERY MODE, NOT DFU MODE. Just repeat the steps until you successfully enter into DFU mode. TIPS
To exit DFU mode is rather simple: hold down the Home and Power button at the same time with iPhone is still connected to iTunes. And reboot the device as usual by hold the Power button.
